Blog interview with Joy:

1.  How did you get introduced to your first farmers market experience?

My first farmers market experience was only about 10 years ago. However as a kid, my family would visit farmers and pick our own fruit like apples and strawberries but back in the 80’s it wasn’t as trendy or popular to visit a farmers market. When there is a lot of produce in season I visit my favourite markets every weekend. I love the whole experience from meeting farmers to choosing the freshest produce and mingling with other like-minded farmers market lovers! The vibe at the markets is all around joyous!

2.  What is the most interesting or oddest or funniest farmers market story you have experienced to date?

The first time I discovered donuts being deep fried in coconut oil was at a farmers market.  As a bit of background, coconut oil is a safe oil to heat to a higher temperature so the thought of a “healthier” donut was very exciting to me! The large majority of donuts are fried in vegetable oil is very UN-heart health friendly. So if you are going to eat a donut, make sure you enjoy every indulgent morsel mindfully. And no, I do not recommend you eat these regularly! 🙂

3.  From a health and personal perspective, what do you think and want visitors to walk away from after visiting their local farmers market?

Shopping at a farmers market is one of the best ways to get super fresh, local and more often then not, organic food. When food hasn’t traveling thousands of miles to get to the market (like most grocery stores) it is more nutrient-dense and far tastier too.

4.  If you could visit any market in the world, which one would it be and why?

There isn’t one market in particular I would love to visit because every city has a unique market. I would love to see them all! However, one of the most memorable markets I’ve ever visited was in Paris — the Raspail Market. Dozens of stalls lined the streets with everything from fresh veggies and fruits to cheese, crafts and take-away prepared foods. It was the most wonderful experience I’ve ever had at a market. The market seemed to go on for miles with more variety than I’ve ever seen at a market. It was lovely to shop with the Parisians too.

5.  If you could take anyone with you to the market–who would it be?

I love shopping with friends and family – those are my favourite people to spend a few hours wandering around at a market. Time is precious these days so I love spending it with those I love and what better way than shopping for a weeks worth of fruits and veggies, fish and cheese (my hubs LOVES cheese) than at a market.

Etsy Canada and West Elm Market Team Up!

Two awesome markets equal one fun pop-up!  Etsy Canada and West Elm Market Toronto partnered up to present a winning line-up of local designers  and artists on Sunday April 26th in the Liberty Village neighborhood.  West Elm shoppers were treated to guest makers and their wares which were on display throughout the store allowing them to share some face time with the talent behind the goods.  Emma Reddington of the Marion House Book and Chatelaine Magazine was tapped to curate this enchanting pop-up.  Be sure to not miss the next one!  Nice way to give the spotlight to our local talent!   Crown Flora Studio was the inspiration for my visit.  Their terrarium designs were beautiful and inspired me to create my own with a bit of help from West Elm Market’s garden department.  A few of my other favorites included Fizzy leather goods, stunning and organic jewelry designs from Cheryl Seung, fresh but simple elegant linen designs from Smith Handmade and Modern Home by Avril Loreti.

An Art Market Prelude to Parkdale Flea

Each time I visit an arts market, I am blown away by the talent displayed.  Spent a lovely Spring Sunday at the Parkdale Art Market put on by Parkdale Flea and Goodfellas Gallery.  Anyone looking for some home-grown talent and amazing art to add to their collections, this is definitely the place to start your search.  Don’t take my word for it, drop in and meet the artists themselves.  Had the pleasure of viewing some of Tyler Tilley‘s colorful works throughout space and great seeing artist/illustrator Emily May Rose in action helping create the mood for the upcoming Parkdale Flea market.  Also chatted with the lovely Stephanie MacKay from Made For Margaret who specializes in one-of-kind jewelry designs–loved her rings!  Have to mention Gert’s Greetings and Gifts vintage Parkdale Village photo coasters and magnets for anyone celebrating Parkdale Collegiate’s 125th Anniversary.  These are but just a few to mention for now.  This indoor market is found at 1266 Queen St West (Dufferin/Noble Street).  Free admission.  Just a quick reminder that the Parkdale Flea is back in season too starting on Sunday May 4th.

Look What I Found When I Popped Up at CSI!

Was pleasantly surprised with this small pop-up market while grabbing a latte from The Coffee Pub and wifi at CSI (Centre for Social Innovation).  Had a chance to walk thru and meet different vendors.  Here were a few of my favorites:

1.  21 Twenty One Toys – Not just for kids but for the kid in all of us!
Bees Are Life – Wonderful selection of honey and related goodies.   Inspiration for my trip to a honey festival this Saturday:)
3.  Abokichi – Sampled two delectable sauces.  You have got to try these, absolutely delicious!
4.  LAFFIN the Dark – Wonderful husband and wife duo sharing their photographic and arts & crafts talents with us!
5.  Handmade Revolution – I am always on the lookout for unique jewelry designs like the ones HR produces.

Fresh fun tees from HWBP (Higgins Would Be Proud)
Stylish and functional totes and clutches from artist Nadia Lloyd

Two Markets Under One Roof in Kitchener

The last time I visited Kitchener I was 13 and taking part in the well-celebrated Oktoberfest that the city has become well adored  for.  Another long-celebrated past-time that is The Kitchener Market that offers two markets under one roof. The main indoor market which features a nice variety of international cuisine and artisans also holds a Farmers Market on Saturdays. Can you believe this is one of the oldest-running farmers markets in Canada?  In case you were wondering how old, over 140 years old!!! Schnitzel, Apple Fritters and Latte hit the spot for a warm hearty lunch on the cold day we were having!

The Toronto Indie Arts Market presented the Small Press & Literary Festival at the Gladstone Hotel on December 14th.  For those readers of all genres looking for something new to add to their bedside reading list, this was a wonderful event to check out and actually get face to face with the authors and creators themselves.  It was the perfect day to be indoors on a snow-filled day.  I had the chance to go around and speak with many of the talented writers and illustrators.  Many thanks to those who shared their stories with me and their time.  Here’s a few of my favorites:

1.  Cool Christmas gift for the men in our lives…The Canadian Craft Beer Cookbook by David Ort
